SIDS: Italy commits one million Euros in view of next International Conference

NEW YORK, JANUARY 22 – The Preparatory Committee for the Fourth International Conference on the Amall Island Developing States (SIDS) met today at UN headquarters in New York. During the meeting, the first in a series concluding on January 26, Italy, as part of the Committee’s Bureau, reaffirmed its concrete commitment through an allocation of one million euros for the preparatory process and through bilateral cooperation for the sustainable development of small island states.

Italy was represented at the meeting by Permanent Representative Maurizio Massari. The Small Island Developing States (SIDS) include 37 UN member nations and 20 associated members of regional commissions, at the forefront of multiple global crises, particularly climate change. The Conference (SIDS4) will take place from May 27 to 30, 2024, in St. John’s, Antigua and Barbuda. Under the overarching theme “Charting the Course Towards Resilient Prosperity,” it aims to assess the SIDS’ ability to achieve sustainable development as outlined by Agenda 2030 and its Goals. The conference will conclude with an agreed political document, focused, forward-looking, and action-oriented.

The Maldives co-chair the Preparatory Committee’s Bureau along with New Zealand, joined by Italy, Barbados, Cape Verde, the Dominican Republic, Fiji, Latvia (Rapporteur), Romania, and Seychelles. Antigua and Barbuda (as the host of the Conference) and Samoa (as the President of AOSIS) serve as ex-officio members. (@OnuItalia)
