NEW YORK, JUNE 29 – The United Nations General Assembly today adopted a resolution for the creation of an independent institution to investigate the fate of missing persons in Syria. “A historic step,” commented the European mission to the UN, recalling that the EU has long supported this humanitarian initiative to give hope to thousands of families still searching for answers about what happened to their loved ones.
83 UN member countries, including Italy, voted in favor, while eleven expressed their opposition and 62 abstained.
Meanwhile, yesterday in Rome, the Secretary General of the Foreign Ministry, Riccardo Guariglia, met with the UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen. Guariglia expressed the Italian government’ full support for the United Nations’ action in the country. “Italy is at the forefront of efforts to stabilize the region, prevent irregular migration flows, and protect Christian minorities,” commented the Foreign Ministry on Twitter.
