COP27: Meloni in Sharm el-Sheikh, Italy will play its part on climate

SHARM EL-SHEIKH, 7 NOVEMBER – “Italy will play its part to stop climate change”, Giorgia Meloni assured on the occasion of her international debut at the COP27 held in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

“We are at a decisive moment in the fight against climate change. Over the last few months we have experienced its dramatic effects throughout Europe, in Pakistan, in the Horn of Africa and in many other regions of the planet. We are called to make deeper and faster efforts to protect our planet”, she said, addressing the leaders’ summit.

The Prime Minister took part in the “Sharm el-Sheikh Climate Implementation Summit” Opening ceremony and in the “Just Transition” round-table before her speech during the Plenary session.

“We intend to pursue a just transition. Recent climate disasters, especially hydrogeological disruption to our territory, showed us that mitigation and adaptation are two sides of the same coin. The fight against climate change is a common endeavour”, said Meloni recalling that Italy increased its financial commitment to the cause.

“We have almost tripled our financial commitment” on this issue allocating “1.4 billion dollar for the next five years”, even though “we cannot hide the fact that the nations that are most committed to this goals risk paying a price to the advantage of those that today are mostly responsible for CO2 emissions on the planet. This is paradoxical and measures are needed to address these imbalances. Our efforts, otherwise, will be vain and the very outcome of events such as the one we are attending today risks not to produce the results that history expects from all of us. As leaders we owe this to our future generations”. (@OnuItalia)
