ICAO: Italy re-elected to the Council (2023-2025); Russia ousted

MONTREAL, OCTOBER 1- Italy was re-elected today to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council along with other European countries – Austria, France, Germany, Iceland, Romania and Spain plus the United Kingdom. Not re-elected, however, was Russia, which, with 80 votes, failed to reach the minimum of 86 votes required to retain a seat on the governing council of the organization in an apparent protest of the ongoing war of aggression in Ukraine. Moscow inherited seat in 1991 with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Italy was re-elected to the First Category of the ICAO Executive Council for the three-year period 2023-2025 during the XLI Assembly of the organization, a Montreal-based United Nations agency tasked with promoting the development and safety of air transport. A total of 193 countries are members of ICAO.

An uninterrupted member of the Executive Council since the establishment of ICAO, “Italy enjoys credibility in the civil aviation sector and the re-election testifies to the particular contribution Italy makes to the sustainable development of air transport and environmental protection,” remarked the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, according to which the very broad consensus gathered “recognizes Italy’s commitment to contributing to the global governance of civil aviation, promoting sustainability and protecting the safety of air transport.” (@OnuItalia)
