Rohingya: Italy in Geneva, “support to Myanmar people, but justice for all victims”

GENEVA, SEPTEMBER 12 – The Deputy Permanent Representative of Italy to the United Nations and other International Organizations in Geneva, Marie Sol Fulci, took the floor today during the Interactive Dialogue on the report of the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar, in the framework of the 51st session of the Human Rights Council.

As last August marked five years since the 2017 campaign against Rohingya communities, Deputy Permanent Representative Fulci reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to holding the perpetrators of those violations and abuses to account. She also highlighted the importance of the work of the Independent Investigative Mechanism in order to ensure full accountability and justice for all victims, and expressed Italy’s firm support to its mandate.

“Italy continues to condemn, in the strongest possible terms, the military coup and is deeply concerned by the systematic attacks against civilians, some of whose amount to crimes against humanity, as well as by the politically motivated executions of dissidents and pro-democracy activists”, the Italian Deputy Permanent Representative stated.

“We stand by the people of Myanmar in its quest for freedom and democracy”, she concluded, reiterating Italy’s appeal to the Myanmar armed forces to end all forms of violence, including sexual and gender-based violence, to immediately and unconditionally release all political prisoners, to return to the facto moratorium of the death penalty and to fully respect human rights and fundamental freedoms.
