NEW YORK, 21 JULY – Italy was re-elected today by acclamation in the Peacebuilding Commission for the 2023-2024 mandate.
The Peacebuilding Commission is an intergovernmental advisory body that supports peace efforts in conflict-affected countries and is a key addition to the capacity of the International Community in the broad peace agenda. It is composed of 31 Member States, elected from the General Assembly, the Security Council, and the Economic and Social Council. The top financial contributing countries and the top troop-contributing countries to the United Nations system are also members. Italy will thus be among the countries at the forefront in the strengthening of the rule of law, institutions, respect for human rights, gender equality, and social inclusion in various scenarios around the world.
“The multiple crises at different latitudes of the planet confirm the value and importance of preventive diplomacy of which the Peacebuilding Commission is an interpreter”, commented Ambassador Maurizio Massari, Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN. The Commission is strategic in that it works in conjunction with the UN General Assembly and Security Council, through a trans-regional approach and open to the participation of external actors. Italy, elected today alongside Denmark, Brazil and Nigeria, returns to the Peacebuilding Commission after its mandate ended in 2018. Recently, the most important countries/regions the Commission has dealt with are Burkina Faso, Chad, Sahel, Central African Republic, Gambia and Liberia. (@OnuItalia)
