UN-Habitat: Italy joins new Group of Friends for Sustainable Urbanization

NEW YORK, JUNE 23 – Ahead of the Eleventh Session of the World Urban Forum to be held in Katowice from JUne 26 to June 30, Italy joined a new Group of Friends of UN-Habitat for Sustainable Urbanization and the New Urban Agenda.

Shaid: up to 65% of SDGs depend on action in cities

Italy confirms its commitment to sustainable urbanization to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, the Italian Mission to the Un said on Twitter. The Group is chaired by Slovakia and Botswana. “While cities take up only 2% of land, they consume 60% of energy, release 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, and produce 70% of global waste”, the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, said at the inaugural meeting at UN Headquarters: “Up to 65% of SDG targets depend on action in cities”.

World Urban Forum established in 2001

The World Urban Forum was established in 2001 by the United Nations to examine one of the most pressing issues facing the world today: rapid urbanization and its impact on communities, cities, economies, climate change and policies. The first WUF was held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2002 and has been held around the world ever since: Italy’s turn to host it was in 2012 in Naples.

Representatives of national, regional and local governments, academics, business people, community leaders, urban planners and civil society representatives will be among the thousands of people are expected to attend WUF11 which tis year is co-organized by Poland’s Ministry of Development Funds and Regional Policy, the Municipal Office of Katowice.
