ENI’s head for sustainable development in Vienna for talks at UNIDO

VIENNA, APRIL 14 – The Italian Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Alessandro Cortese, and ENI’s Head for Sustainable Development, Alberto Piatti met today UNIDO’s Director General Gerd Müller to further enhance the partnership among Italy, ENI and UNIDO on the Green Energy transition, economic diversification and education in developing countries.
ENI has a longstanding cooperation with UN agencies: last February, in collaboration with the European Union, UNICEF and the Basra Governatorate in Iraq, a project was launched aiming to improve the water quality for 850,000 people in Basra City, including over 160,000 children as direct beneficiaries. As a response, and thanks to the project, 350,000 people in two communities within Basra city, will have access to improved and climate resilient water services. In addition, 1,000 people in Basra city, especially young people, will have improved capacity to contribute to delivering equitable services and promote employment-intensive green growth.
In January Eni UNESCO signed a four-year Memorandum of Understanding in Mexico to identify potential joint project initiatives that will contribute to boost the sustainable development of the local economy through economic diversification, protection of natural and cultural heritage, access to basic services and to respect and promote human rights and inclusion. Under the MoU, the parties will evaluate specific opportunities of collaboration within several areas of intervention such as the conservation and sustainable management of natural resources. The partners also aim to collaborate in the protection and promotion of culture and traditional knowledge, promoting economic diversification.
Last month ENI, through its Nigerian subsidiaries Nigerian Agip Exploration (NAE) and Agip Energy & Natural Resources (AENR), and FAO have commissioned 11 water schemes in Borno and Yobe States, North-East Nigeria. The integrated water schemes – comprised of boreholes, solar power systems, treatment facilities and fetching points – provide water for domestic consumption and micro- irrigation purposes. They were constructed under the framework of the ‘Access to Water’ initiative implemented by FAO and Eni, in collaboration with Eni’s partner, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). This public-private partnership leverages the skills and know-how of the public and private sectors to improve access to water for the communities affected by the humanitarian crisis in the North East.
