International Law: a virtual conversation between Italy’s Nesi and ICJ Judge Yusuf

NEW YORK, OCTOBER 29 – The crucial importance of regionalism, diversity and inclusiveness of international law were on the agenda today of the virtual conversation between Professor Giuseppe Nesi and Judge Abdulqawi A. Yusuf of the International Court of Justice.

Nesi, a renowned scholar with an outstanding academic record and solid experience in diplomatic affairs, is Italy’s candidate to the International Law Commission for 2023-2027. Election will be held in November. If elected, Nesi will follow the steps of other distinguished Italian members, including Roberto Ago, Gaetano Arangio-Ruiz, and Giorgio Gaja, who played a leading role in some of the Commission’s most complex and significant codification.

Professor Nesi is ready to offer his expertise and experience to help further develop and strengthen the ILC. As former delegate of the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly he is strongly committed to an ongoing interaction between the ILC and the Sixth Committee, in the conviction that the works of the ILC must ultimately serve the community of States represented in the United Nations General Assembly.

Over 100 diplomats and experts joined the event in person, featuring introductory remarks of the Italian Permanente Representative to the United nations in New York, Maurizio Massari.

Italy’s contribution to the United Nations is characterized by a strong commitment to the promotion and development of the rule of law. Its consistent policy of strengthening the role of international law, international institutions and effective multilateralism has earned worldwide respect. Italy also funds and participates actively in the United Nations Programme of Assistance in the Teaching, Study, Dissemination and Wider Appreciation of International Law.

In addition to his teaching and research, Professor Nesi has served as a legal advisor to the Italian Diplomatic Corps and to international institutions. Since 1992 he has been a Legal Counsellor to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation. His assignments have included Legal Adviser to the Italian Mission in New York (2002-2010) while in 2010-11 he was appointed Legal Adviser to the President of the UN General Assembly.

During his time in New York, he participated in numerous bilateral and multilateral negotiations on delicate and complex issues and represented Italy in all the activities of the Sixth Committee of the General Assembly and related bodies. He was the Vice-Chair of the Special Committee on the Charter of the United Nations and on the Strengthening of the Role of the Organization, and was the Legal Adviser of the Italian Delegation in the Security Council.
