UNGA 76: Afghanistan, Libya and climate change on Di Maio and Guterres’ agenda

NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 23 – The Italian Minister for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Luigi Di Maio met today UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The climate agenda, as well as on the situations in Afghanistan and Libya were on the agenda. Guterres expressed his appreciation for Italy’s support for multilateralism and the United Nations, as well as its leadership in the G20 and COP26.
Di Maio met also the President of the General Assembly Abdulla Shahid: they discussed the situation in Afghanistan, Italy’s G-20 presidency, the COP26 in Glasgow, climate change, youth engagement and the Security Council reform. Foreign Minister Di Maio assured the full support of Italy to the President of the General Assembly’s priorities for the 76th session, while Shahid underlined his priorities of women’s rights and gender, as well as the vaccination of the world’s population by the end of 2022, in order to overcome the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Today the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Marina Sereni, met the UN’s Deputy Amina Mohammed at UN’s Headquarters. “Strengthening multilateralism is our key to address global challenges”, she said after a meeting that focused on a strong partnership based on the presidency of the G20, the Food Systems Summit, the organization of the Pre-Cop and the COP 26 on climate change, and the dossiers on Afghanistan, Africa, and the Sdgs.
