Global Compact: Massari meets Sanda Ojiambo, talks about SDgs, SMEs and Africa

NEW YORK, AUGUST 10 – Today, for the first time since his appointment, the Permanent Representative of Italy to the UN Maurizio Massari met with UN Global Compact CEO and Executive Director, Sanda Ojiambo.

The meeting addressed shared priorities between Italy and the UN regarding the involvement of the private sector in achieving the goals for sustainable development of the 2030 Agenda, the role of small and medium-sized enterprises and the economic growth of
Africa. Today Director Ojiambo virtually met the Global Compact 2021 SDG Pioneers as well: among them, Sicilian entrepreneur Giulia Giuffrè, Board Member and Sustainability Ambassador at the Sicilian company Irritec, chosen for the sustainable water
management programme. Irritec is among the world’s leading companies in the field of precision irrigation.

Originally from Kenya, in 2020 Ojiambo joined the Global Compact, the world’s largest strategic enterprise citizenship initiative born from an intuition of Secretary-General Kofi Annan in order to promote a sustainable global economy, the respect for human and labour rights, environmental protection and the fight against corruption.

The Global Compact was officially launched in July 2000. Since then, more than 18,000 companies from 160 countries around the world – of which almost 500 in Italy – have joined and contributed to the creation of a global-scale cooperation institution in the field of sustainable development.
