GENEVA, JUNE 21 – The 47th session of the Human Rights Council, the main body of the United Nations for the promotion and protection of global human rights, kicked off today in Geneva with the intervention of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet.
During the session, the Council will discuss situations regarding the human rights protections of forty countries, as well as specific issues relating to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Council will also review seventy reports from human rights experts and other investigative bodies, and more than thirty interactive dialogues will be held with special procedures.
The Council will also adopt the final reports of the last cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in relation to the human rights situations in Micronesia, Lebanon, Mauritania, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Australia, Saint Lucia, Nepal, Oman, Austria, Rwanda, Georgia, Nauru, and São Tomé and Príncipe.
Italy, a member of the Council from 2019-2021, maintains active participation in the group, especially in relation to the priority issues of its mandate. The Permanent Representative of Italy to the International Organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Gian Lorenzo Cornado, will serve on the panel to discusses female genital mutilation, as well as take part in the interactive dialogues on the subject of sexual orientation and gender identity, discrimination and violence against women, and human trafficking.
