NEW YORK, 9 GIUGNO – Addressing today the Management Segment of ECOSOC, Italy reaffirmed its strong support to the United Nations System Staff College (UNSSC) and UNITAR, the United Nations Institute for Training and Research. “Knowledge is an indispensable tool for the work of the United Nations”, an Italian delegate said: “Italy is proud to host the UNSSC in Turin”.
ECOSOC: Italy reaffirms support to Turin-based Staff College and to UNITAR
The United Nations System Staff College was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2001 in Turin, Italy, to foster a cohesive leadership and management culture for the entire UN system. Located on the UN’s only residential campus, UNSSC Headquarters enjoys a beautiful natural setting, right on the river Po and opening onto the Valentino Park.
The complex was originally built by the Italian government in 1961 to celebrate the centenary of Italy’s unity and the year, 1861, when Turin was united Italy’s first capital. The buildings represented the nation’s different regions and are configured in the shape of a boot. Gifted to the United Nations in 1964, the campus – now organized into five clusters, representing the world’s continents – welcomes people from all over the world to live and learn together in a stimulating international environment. Purpose-built rooms and state-of-the-art equipment help to maximize learning and knowledge-sharing, while residential services provide for a pleasant stay, including cultural and social events in the evenings and on weekends.
Offering courses such as Innovation in Space Diplomacy and Diplomacy and Anti-Corruptions, Switzerland-based UNITAR provides innovative learning solutions to individuals, organizations and institutions to enhance global decision-making and support country-level action for shaping a better future. The Institute was created in 1963 to train and equip young diplomats from newly-independent UN Member States with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate through the diplomatic environment. Fifty-nine per cent of the Institute’s activities are delivered face-to-face, whilst thirty-eight per cent are delivered via UNITAR’s e-Learning platform. Seventy-eight per cent of UNITAR’s face-to-face activities take place at the country level, whilst some are conducted from UNITAR’s Headquarters in Geneva, as well as through its Offices in New York and Hiroshima.
