Cornado: to build back better after COVID, prioritize children safety

GENEVA, MARCH 8 – In order to build back better after the pandemic, it is necessary to prioritize children empowerment and safety as well as their right to physical and mental health, the Italian Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Geneva, Gian Lorenzo Cornado, said today. “Italy – said the Ambassador – attaches the utmost importance to the protection of the rights of children, especially those in situations of vulnerability, such as children victims of all forms of violence and exploitation, including in the digital environment”.

Addressing a special panel of the 46th session of the Human Rights Council, Cornado stressed that the global pandemic and the containment measures have increased the risk and the episodes of violence and abuses against children, also through the internet and digital platforms. “Nonetheless, maintaining and increasing safe internet accessibility and affordability for children is essential to preserve learning and play, especially during lockdown periods”, he added.

“Meaningful children and young people participation is key”, said Cornado: “Children can indeed contribute in shaping interventions regarding their safety and well-being in order to move towards a world free from all forms of violence against them”. (@OnuItalia)
