Zappia: UNGA75 priorities "fully align" with G20 Presidency's agenda

NEW YORK, JANUARY 25 – Italy welcomes and strongly supports President of the 75th General Assembly Volkan Bozkir’s priorities for the resumed 75th session of the General Assembly. “The months ahead of us – the Italian Permament Representative Mariangela Zappia said today – will be of crucial importance to overcome the pandemic, recover better and bring the 2030 Agenda back on track. To achieve these goals, we are called to collectively recommit to a strengthened and effective multilateralism, with the UN and this Assembly at its core”, Zappia said during an informal General Assembly meeting.

The Italian Ambassador stated that the PGA’s priorities “fully align” with Italy’s G20 priorities on People, Planet and Prosperity. She announced that next week the Italian G20 Sherpa will brief the General Assembly on the main priorities of the G20 Presidency, which include: ensuring universal and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines and treatments; strengthening global health security and cooperation,; decisively accelerating the climate action and intensifying the protection of biodiversity and the environment; boosting socio-economic recovery and financing for sustainable development; delivering on key systemic transformations for SDGs implementation. “Women empowerment will also feature high in our G20 agenda. In that regard, we truly appreciate, Mr. President, your engagement in advancing women’s rights”.

Zappia noted that effective multilateralism depends on effective institutions. In this regard, she stressed the importance of reforming the UN, with a special focus on the Security Council. “Italy is strongly committed to contribute with a positive attitude and in good faith to the intergovernmental negotiations which will start again next week”, she said: “This is an extremely important discussion which should lead us towards a truly consensual reform to a vision of an enlarged Security Council which serves the interest of the whole membership”.
