VIENNA, DECEMBER 7 – Ambassador Alessandro Cortese -the Italian Permanent Representative to the International Organizations in Vienna- was elected by acclamation on December 4 as the President of the 30th Session of the United Nations Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice (CCPCJ).
Italy, one of the 40 countries of the Commission
The CCPCJ was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) resolution 1992/1, upon request of General Assembly (GA) resolution 46/152, as one of its functional commissions. Italy is currently one of the 40 member states of the Commission, having been recently re-elected by ECOSOC for a further three year mandate (2021-2023).
The impact of Covid-19 on crime
Cortese reminded the Assembly of the importance of the Commission’s 2021 mandate. The CCPCJ will act as a preparatory organ for the UN Crime Congress, the 14th edition of which will be taking place in Kyoto between March 7th and 12th, 2021. The current pandemic and its socio-economic implications -continued the Ambassador- have a significant impact on criminal phenomena, as they exacerbate certain types of crimes and are putting justice systems to the test.
In this regard, the CCPCJ is a valuable platform through which countries and international governmental organizations can share information and strengthen their cooperation in fighting crime. The Commission will be meeting in Vienna for its Annual Assembly between the 17th and 21st of May. The theme of this year’s Assembly, which is usually discussed throughout the second day of work, will focus on efforts against the trafficking of migrants. (SB@OnuItalia)
