Zappia: “recovery better” can only be possible if we start from human rights

NEW YORK/GENEVA, OCTOBER 15 – “Recovery better can only be possible if we starts from human rights”, the Italian Permanent Representative to the UN, Mariangela Zappia, said today during an interactive dialogue with the UN Rights High Commissioner, Michelle Bachelet.

The promotion and the protection of human dignity in all its forms, the protection of the environment, food security and nutrition, women empowerment, the digital divide but also how to use technology to support human rights are all priorities at the heart of Italian foreign policy. Addressing via VTC the Third Committee of the 75th General Assembly, Zappia recalled Italy’s long-standing support of the abolition of the death penalty: “It is a traditional and distinctive priority for us, dating back to the first abolition ever of the capital punishment, in 1786, in the Grand Duchy of Tuscany”.

The Ambassador put the spotlight on the 2021 Italian presidency of the G20 starting from the 1st of December of this year: “We are very conscious of the special responsibility we have in this very particular moment and we have put People, Prosperity and the Planet at the core of our Presidency”.
