Least Developed Countries: Italy will continue its support to turn crisis into opportunity

Emanuela del Re

NEW YORK, SEPTEMBER 17 – Addressing today’s UN Ministerial meeting on Least Developed Countries (LDC), the Italian Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, Emanuela Del Re, stressed that “pursuing all Sustainable Developing Goals is the only way to create a sustainable world. Transforming this crisis into an opportunity we can bring about the energy needed to achieve the  2030 Agenda”.

Italy will continue to support Least Developed Countries, strengthening partnerships with them, all relevant actors and UN Agencies, said Del Re: “We look forward to the V Conference on LDCs: elaborating solutions for the future to achieve the Istanbul Programme of Action and the SDGs”.

Least developed countries are low-income countries confronting severe structural impediments to sustainable development. They are highly vulnerable to economic and environmental shocks and have low levels of human assets.

There are currently 47 countries on the list of LDCs which is reviewed every three years by the Committee for Development (CDP). 12 of these countries are in the process of graduation, the Deputy UN Secretary Amina Mohammed said in her address to the meeting. (@OnuItalia)
