COVID-19: Zappia to UniSiena, “Women on frontline, risk human rights, socio-economic inclusion”

NEW YORK/SIENA, MAY 14 – Women are on the frontline of COVID-19. The pandemic risks to impact severely on women’s rights and socio-economic inclusion. The response must take into account their specific needs, integrate a gender perspective and their meaningful participation in decision-making to “recover better”, the Italian Permanent Representative to the UN, Mariangela Zappia, said today addressing a panel on “The value of diversity: paths of inclusiveness” organized by the University od Siena on YouTube.

“There is a risk for womens’ human rights – sexual and reproductive, but also of violence against women – and there is also an economic impact,” said Zappia noting that in general women are less paid than men, they have less savings and less access to credit, and, when they work, their type of employment is more precarious.

The panel, moderated by Angelo Riccaboni, professor of the University of Siena and President of the PRIMA Foundation, was also attended by Claudia Cattani, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Italian Railway Network and Chairman of the board of statutory auditors and member of the Board of Directors of listed companies; Sabina Nuti, rector of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna of Pisa, and Paul Zilianti, marketing director of P & G Oral Care IMEA.
