COVID-19: Italy joins 52 other countries in supporting UNSG Guterres’ call for immediate ceasefire

Antonio Guterres

NEW YORK, MARCH 30 – Italy joined 52 other countries in supporting UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres’ call for an immediate global ceasefire in view of the current pandemic of Covid-1. The statement was made in national capacity and as member of the Group of Friends of Women, Peace and Security, the Group of Friends of Children and Armed Conflicts, and the Group of Friends of the Protection of Civilians.

In an appeal issued last Monday, Guterres urged warring parties across the world to lay down their weapons in support of the bigger battle against  COVID-19: the common enemy that is now threatening all of humankind.

“The fury of the virus illustrates the folly of war”, he said.  “That is why today, I am calling for an immediate global ceasefire in all corners of the world.  It is time to put armed conflict on lockdown and focus together on the true fight of our lives.”
