VIENNA, SEPTEMBER 11 – Salvatore Vella, the state prosecutor of Agrigento, is participating today at a meeting on “Smuggling and trafficking of migrants” at the United Nations headquarters in Vienna. Vella brought to the attention of representatives of UN members states the experience of the prosecutor’s office in Agrigento, a city on the Southern coast of Sicily, on the frontline of refugees and migrants arrival from Libya.
Vella’s report on the trafficking of migrants in central Mediterranean has attracted significant interest from the delegations of the 189 Countries signatories of the 2000 Palermo Convention on organized transnational crime, which includes a protocol on the smuggling of migrants.
The meeting at Vienna, ending on September 13, has the “objective of modifying and improving the strategic efforts against human traffickers by intensifying the collaborations between Countries from different regions of the world.” (@OnuItalia)
