Syria: Italy in Geneva voices special concern for the suffering of women

GENEVA, JULY 10 – During the 41st Session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Italy voiced its special concern for the suffering of women that represent almost half of the Syrian population. “The toll of a nine-year long conflict on Syrian women has been particularly brutal and many are now the sole providers for their families. We firmly believe that women must be involved if any political transition is to be successful as democracy can only take root if the human rights of both women and men are respected”, an Italian delegate said, during an Interactive Dialogue with the Commission of Inquiry in Syria.

“The human rights and humanitarian situation in Syria remains dire and the recent surge of violence, in and around the Idlib de-escalation zone, which caused civilian casualties and further displacement, is extremely worrisome”, said the Italian delegate reiterating Italy’s “full and strong support” to the efforts of the UN Special Envoy Geir Pederson to facilitate a political process that will lead to a negotiated durable outcome for the conflict, pursuant to the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions. In this context, Italy supports Pederson’s endeavor to convene the Constitutional Committee as well as the implementation of all the elements set forth by Resolution 2254. (@OnuItalia)
